Nobody understands the blather Northwestern Energy is spouting to explain its plans for Colstrip, a subsidiary, customer credits, and … perhaps … bivationary falvebarms.
But someone needs to look out for the interests of a handful of tech bro billionaires designing our future! And by befuddling our congenitally and terminally befuddled PSC, they’re easily achieving their goals! They need endless amounts of electricity to power their data centers. And we get the distinct pleasure of subsidizing our own demise! What a deal! With folks like Bucacek and Pannucci to defend our interests, all is lost before the battle even begins!
It’s really depressing when you realize that it’s basically just a few people calling the shots. Maybe ten tech billionaires at most? And even more depressing when you realize that basically three people can destroy an iconic river like The Smith River to aide the billionaires in their quest for the huge amount of copper necessary to construct data centers.
Think about it. The state’s beautiful gem of a river now faces the very real prospect of destruction by a copper mine on its confluence. EVERY copper mine in the country leaks. Not my words, but the words of every governmental mining publication. How did this happen?
Again, instigated by only three people. Two area ranchers, TWO, decided to sell their ranches to a mining corporation, completely oblivious to the fact that they are destroying a river that affects ALL of us downstream, including into the Missouri. They somehow conveniently forget the fact that we are ALL stakeholders. How frickin greedy and venal do you have to be to screw over your fellow Montanans in such a way? Are they really not content to own a beautiful ranch? I don’t get it.
So along with the two ranchers, one dumbass geologist from White Sulfur decides for himself that he has the right to destroy the river. He explores and finds some potential minerals, and invites in one of the largest foreign mining corporations to bid to build the mine! Sandfire is a huge Australian
mining company! And of course our worthless DEQ finds no problem with destroying a river. That’s their job.
So, in spite of TEN THOUSAND COMMENTS against the mine, the power of three prevails, which threatens the enormous revenue generated by all the folks from throughout the country who come to recreate on the Smith. It’s really pretty damn sad to think that we’re in a situation where such a small number of people can ruin things for the vast majority of us. And with AI in its infancy, it’s just going to get worse!
“A Harris Poll found that, for the first time, a majority of Americans also see billionaires—many of them fueled by the AI bubble — as a threat to democracy, with 71 percent supporting a wealth tax. Yet few of the Democrats hoping to retake Congress in 2027 are advocating such a levy. This is a dangerous disconnect.”
As we allow our land and water to be destroyed, and our electric bills to quadruple, it’s vital to understand that most people don’t want what the billionaires and NW Energy say we must have. We got to fight like hell to even get back to square one now. We got steamrolled with that gas plant in Laurel. Now, we need to say no data centers anywhere in Montana. Making billionaires into trillionaires is not a Montana value!
“Open-pit optionality: Enables potential open-pit mining scenarios, which are far more economical than underground operations.”
This one sentence alone should scare the hell out of everyone who loves the Smith River and the Little Belt Mountains. This was taken from an ad for prospective mines in Idaho, but it applies very much to the Smith River Mine development also. For you see, the foreign corporations wanting to develop the mine have publicly stated that “at this time”, they have no plans for an open pit mine, but that they can’t rule it out in the future! In fact, they have secured many forest service mining claims throughout the area which would provide the necessary land to go that route!
So, in essence, we could have another Berkely Pit in the Little Belts. That prospect is absolutely unimaginable to most everyone in Great Falls, for the Little Belts are our elk hunting grounds! And with AI and the billionaires supporting it, they can buy off ANY political opposition. For those of us who love the west, the fight is just beginning. We’re getting sold out. And for what?
No WONDER we need data centers! The corporations can’t screw us REAL good without having all our data! Thank God NW Energy is willing to rob us and make our lives more difficult for the benefit of the tech bro billionaires. And by the grace of God we have local jokel leaders stupid enough to fall for every new high tech scheme that comes along! That’s what they call progress. Hey, billionaires gotta eat too!
Setting satire aside for a moment, watch this extremely important video. Many of you will recognize Walt Schweitzer. The issues in the video affect all of us. Therefore, if we want to have even a chance of protecting ourselves from these corporate criminals, we first have to understand what’s going on. And many of you have probably already discovered for yourselves that your high tech new car is a whole different ball game when it comes to repairs. Me, personally, that’s why I drive old beaters.
