Beyond Party – Montana First Aims to Break Political Party Strangleholds

Prominent Repubs and Dems Tired of Partisanship, Money Fueling MT Politics

By Bill Lombardi

As factions in Montana Republican and Democratic circles vigorously debate the use of “Dark Money” and spar over outside influences on state races, a new nonprofit has emerged to leverage the seeming rising power of “moderates” who shun party influence and cut legislative deals that anger their partisans.

Beyond Party – Montana First

Called Beyond Party – Montana First, this new nonprofit is helmed by a crew of key Republicans and Democrats who want to temper the partisanship engendered by political parties and ensure that politicians get support to create policy that appears to benefit Montana citizens and not just one political party or another.

“Beyond Party is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting the principles of good government,” the group, which registered with the Montana Secretary of State last October, says on its website.

The group says that “your contribution nurtures Republican and Democratic principles articulated in the Montana constitution by empowering principled candidates, countering the corrosive forces of unrelenting partisanship and unlimited money, and mobilizes citizens to reclaim self-governance at every level.”

Beyond Party President Daniel Kemmis of Missoula told me that members were “motivated” to break from party rule after nine state Senate Republicans (dubbed the “Nasty Nine” by hard-core GOP members) famously teamed up with Senate Democrats last year in the Montana Legislature to “stop really bad legislation, especially about partisan elections for the judiciary.” Currently, candidates don’t declare partisan leanings in judicial races.

“Our feeling has been, that especially those that are in red [GOP] districts, that we’d like to not see them [the nine Republicans] get knocked out,” Kemmis told me. “Most are likely to get primaried. Part of the motivation is to see if there is anything we can do to protect and help these courageous Republicans. And beyond that, we just want to see if there’s anything useful we can do to lower the partisan temperature overall.”

But The Temperature Keeps Rising

The temperature, however, keeps rising in advance of the June 2026 Montana legislative primaries. The feud between more-moderate GOP members, who call themselves Montana Conservative Republicans, and the staunch GOP members who run the party and guide the Montana Freedom Caucus, is boiling over, with social-media darts being lobbed back and forth between the factions.

Far-right Republicans accuse “moderate” Republicans of working with and taking money from Democratic and “progressive” operatives, like Fireweed Campaigns of Helena, while “moderate” GOPers accuse the far-right of being bankrolled by dark money from the Koch-brothers’-funded Americans for Prosperity (AFP) and beholden to “out-of-state interests” and “party bosses.”

Meanwhile, Democrats are, more modestly and discreetly, carping at one another over the same issues – the use of “dark money” that allows donors to be anonymous and is used to elect “moderate” Republicans; the influence of outside groups in dictating who will run for office; and the intervention of a U.S. Senate candidate [Seth Bodnar] who is using former staff and consultants of Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Tester to run as an independent while criticizing both parties and raising money through the Democratic Party’s ActBlue political action committee account.

Beyond Party wants to eschew the unpleasant work of politics to attract independents

The kind of internecine rugby occurring in both major political parties in Montana is of little use to Beyond Party.

Beyond Party, it seems, wants to eschew the unpleasant work of politics to attract independents and others who want to get things done without getting their hands dirty in partisan shenanigans.

That’s a heavy lift, especially as politicos fiercely compete for attention in a world disorganized by the Texter-In-Chief, President Trump, who has rewired the communication synapses of the masses and patented outrage as a national treasure.

Beyond Party will “actively participate” in elections: “We won’t just endorse; we’ll educate, analyze, and provide clear, unbiased information,” the nonprofit’s website says.

Beyond Party has two purposes: to protect the foundational principles of good government, and to ensure the republic stays strong, relevant, and rooted in the will of the people. Moreover, it will defend citizen self-governance, open government, the democratic process, an independent judiciary, separation of powers, and rule of law.

Who are the bipartisan nonprofit’s founders?

  • Former GOP Montana Attorney General and Gov. Marc Racicot, who has publicly criticized President Trump’s sensibilities, judgment and “autocratic compulsions”
  • Former Democratic state Sen. Mike Halligan of Missoula, a Vietnam veteran, lawyer, and philanthropic leader who helmed the The Dennis & Phyllis Washington Foundation
  • Missoula attorney Mae Nan Ellingson, who served as a Republican – and youngest – delegate to the 1972 Montana Constitutional Convention and has been a distinguished lawyer in state finance law and champion of civic education and constitutional integrity
  • Former state GOP Rep. Joel Krautter, a Billings attorney who unsuccessfully ran for Montana’s eastern congressional seat in 2024 and is known for his bipartisan work for rural communities
  • Former state Senate President Bob Brown, a teacher and political historian who also served as Montana Secretary of State and ran unsuccessfully for governor as a Republican in 2004
  • Former Kalispell Police Department Chief Frank Garner, who served in the Montana House of Representatives as a Republican and worked across the aisle on public safety, accountability and government integrity
  • An eastern Montana farm kid who graduated from Harvard, Kemmis is Beyond Party’s president and is a former Democratic speaker of the Montana House of Representatives, former Missoula mayor, and an author who opines on democracy, leadership and civic life

Beyond Party wants to encourage “moderates” of the Republican and Democratic Parties

Beyond Party does kindly critique political parties on its website: “We acknowledge that political parties have played an important role in American democracy from the outset, and that money has played a similarly important role. But we believe that the role of both parties and money should be kept subordinate to the common good. Because that has not happened, unrestrained partisanship and unlimited money have become the twin challenges of our current political system.”

Other efforts to help elect or reelect so-called “moderate” Republicans in GOP-leaning legislative districts in Montana may have more money. But Beyond Party, Kemmis said, has “slender” funding from “some of our friends. We don’t have any big money at all, and really don’t expect to have any.”

Kemmis said he persuaded the group to be transparent, including in how it’s funded. “I’m not certain that we can stick with that and raise enough money to be effective,” he added.

In a follow-up interview, Kemmis said,“I don’t think parties are going to go away.

“If it were up to me to design things, I wouldn’t have this deeply entrenched two-party system. We would be better off if there were room for more parties,” Kemmis said. “I think the most we can do is when we get into polarized situations we should try to encourage the more-sensible people near the middle of both parties so there is some chance of doing joint problem-solving. To me, that’s the most important thing – to be able to be pragmatic in solving some of the big problems we face. When the two parties are locked in a death grip, it becomes difficult to do this.”

Asked about fundamental principles the group supports, Kemmis said, “The core is democracy itself. But that depends on the ability to deliberate. So you have to be able to work across ideological lines at least to the extent to work things out. Another key is some kind of equity on the financial front so that money doesn’t have more of a role in the process than it should have. There has to be some equity and fairness about where the resources come from. That’s not the case now, and there has to be transparency.”

Is “Beyond Party” the path to end the polarization?

It’s hard to keep up with Montana’s intraparty ping-pong matches. Yet it’s fun, vibrant, and lets voters decide – hopefully out in the open – what kind of candidate and political philosophy that they want. To close the blinds on that sunshine would be a disservice to Montana voters, whose historic libertarian and populist streaks are the best counter to too much of anything.

And, simply, let party members choose which faction they like – or if they don’t like political parties, at all.

Alternative Titles: “2026: Blue Wave” or “Democrats Make Gains and Republicans Freak Out”

Great Falls, MT

The filing period for candidates has closed in Montana. So how are things looking? The energy reminds me of 2018, because of all the Democrats filing. Every legislative district in Cascade County has a Democrat on the slate. That is the best candidate recruitment we’ve seen since 2018. Really good news for Democrats. The left leaning folks are fired up and ready to go!

Behold this map! We can make it all blue, not just HD 19 that we hold right now!!

Map of Great Falls Montana area precincts

Well sorry folks we can’t celebrate too long. It’s back to the grind again, because the Republicans are imploding and trying to take us with them.

What Republican Tantrum Do We Have to Deal With Now?

Zinke and Daines are Out

First the good news, Congressman Ryan Zinke (MT-01) and U.S. Senator Steve Daines dropped out of their races!!  While they may bring us fresh hell in the future as zombie candidates for governor or something….at least Republicans have lost the incumbency advantage in those races.

Let them Fight – Libertarians primarying Republicans

Then, three local Libertarians have decided to run as Republicans, calling themselves “Libertarian-Republicans.” They’re primarying known Republicans in state legislative races to do it (SD-10, HD-20, and HD-22).

State Representative George Nikolakakos is BIG MAD about it. He ranted on his public Facebook that Kevin Leatherbarrow, a candidate for HD-22, “is a perennial Libertarian candidate”…”running as a “Constitutional Republican” (whatever that means in his mind).” When Tony Rosales (the chair of the local Libertarian Party) filed to run in HD-20 against George’s wife Melissa, fellow State Representative George Nikolakakos declared, “It’s raining crazy in Great Falls with the filing deadline over!”

Looks like the Cascade County Libertarians and Republicans won’t be singing kumbaya together any time soon. Dang.

MAGA Republicans Filing as Democrats

If you squint, you can see how Libertarians and Republicans can overlap. But MAGA and Democrats? No.

Bugs Bunny saying No

But somehow the dumbass loony toons of James Whitaker and Mark Winters decided to file in Montana Senate Districts 11 and 12, respectively as Democrats. As if the voters wouldn’t notice James Whitaker running concurrently for a Republican precinct person position (an elected position as a voting member in the local Cascade County GOP), and the fact that Mark Winters is/was a Republican precinct person until he stepped down a couple of days after filing.

The Chair of the Local Republican Party had this to say about both candidates:

Eric Hinebauch, chair of the Cascade County Republican Central Committee and a member of the Cascade County Commission….believes the pair filed in Democratic primaries to deter Democratic voters from crossing over to vote in Republican primaries. He told Montana Free Press that he doesn’t believe either candidate is really a Democrat.

(quote from the Montana Free Press article: https://montanafreepress.org/2026/03/12/two-candidates-in-cascade-county-claim-to-be-democrats-local-party-leadership-says-thats-a-hoax/)

You Decide – MAGA or Democrat?

I will summarize some items I found in a 5 minute Google search and let you the reader be the judge! Do these people seem like Democrats? Would you say that their candidacies for the nominations were made in good faith? Or….do you think they are lying to the voters?

Google Search Results on Whitaker and Winters:

James Whitaker Mark Winters
  • Running to be a Republican precinct person in the 2026 election
  • Ran for HD-22 as a Republican in 2024
  • Local GOP Party chair says he is not a Democrat

Based on that summary, I assume you agree with me that they are NOT Democrats. In my opinion, filing to run as a candidate for a political party where you do not overlap at all on party platform positions is completely disrespectful to voters. It is an honor and a privilege to be a candidate for political office. Meanwhile, Whitaker and Winters just spit in the voters’ faces instead.

Why are these MAGAs filing as Democrats?

In the Montana Free Press article, Rae Grulkowski’s loss to Eric Hinebauch in the 2024 Republican primary for Cascade County commissioner was brought up.

And foreshadowing, that loss is highly relevant to the rest of this post.

Grulkowski blamed her loss on Democrats voting in the Republican primary. You can read that twice. Grulkowski is pissed, and I suspect her little cabal of MAGA weirdos is behind the push for Republicans to file as Democrats in Cascade County. She is still mad she lost, and she blames Democrats rather than having some self-reflection. PEOPLE DIDN’T VOTE FOR YOU RAE, BECAUSE YOU WERE BAD AT YOUR JOB.

My conclusion is that Whitaker and Winters filed to force Democratic primaries and ensure that Democrats don’t crossover vote in the Republican primary. Yep. It’s worth lying to the voters to get their way! Sounds about MAGA.

AnYwAy, James Whitaker and Mark Winters are Rae Grulkowski’s people, and Steven Vinnedge and Kathryn Hansen are also her people. Since both Steven Vinnedge and Kathryn Hansen signed that stupid petition that was going around in 2021-2022 asking the county to eliminate mail ballots and count all ballots by hand instead of using the counting machines.

Picture of signature list for a handcount petition
Signature list of more names for handcount petition

Why do I bring up Steven Vinnedge and Kathryn Hansen? More MAGA idiocy

Both Steven Vinnedge and Kathryn Hansen filed to be Democratic precinct people in Cascade County. Not satisfied with destroying their own party, the MAGA wing is trying to become voting members of the local Democratic Party. And yes, like Winters and Whitakers, it’s not hard to find the crazy on Vinnedge and Hansen. They are not Democrats.

Here are some lowlights from Steven Vinnedge’s public Facebook posts:

Vinnedge Facebook post saying Democrat Party is a hostile terrorist organization from October 2025

Facebook post by Vinnedge about keeping the deportations coming

Yeah…Steven Vinnedge is not a Democrat.

What about Kathryn Hansen?

Like the others, it is well known that Hansen is a Republican. She spoke openly against the Great Falls Library Board recommendations at an October 2023 Great Falls City Commission meeting and asked them to appoint anti-library levy applicant Noelle Johnson. ::Shocker::, at the same meeting, Steven Vinnedge was there also dissing the library board. Almost like they align politically! As I pointed out above, both Kathryn Hansen and Steven Vinnedge signed that bananapants all return to paper ballots, all hand counting petition.

There you have it folks

MAGA is going through an extinction burst, and hopefully we can work around them until they finish destroying themselves. Meanwhile, the local Democratic Party is seriously kicking some ass with candidate recruitment and strengthening of their party.

Spy vs Spy

Spy vs Spy

Most of us were stunned at the Machiavellian maneuvering on the last day of the filing period for public office in Montana.

After a brief period of “will he or won’t he file as a Democrat,” Seth Bodnar filed as an independent for Montana’s U.S. Senate seat on March 4 at 9:17 AM.

Some time after that Steve Daines withdrew from the Senate race.

Billings lawyer, Kurt Alme, filed to run for the Senate seat at 4:52 PM on March 4, just eight minutes before the deadline.

So here’s one reason for the last minute shuffle on the filing deadline.

Republicans understood that Seth Bodnar could be a compelling candidate if he filed as a Democrat. Much less so if he filed as an independent. Incumbent Daines is the strongest person to protect that Republican seat from a serious Democratic challenge.

Early in the morning of the last day to file Bodnar files as an independent which kicked off this Spy vs Spy conspiracy. Daines resigns. Hours later Alme announces he is running with the support of Daines, President Donald Trump, U.S. Sen. Tim Sheehy and Gov. Greg Gianforte. Obviously this plan has been in the works for some time.

But why would Daines do this now rather than waiting until after the election? It’s hard to argue that Alme or anyone else in the Republican ranks would be as strong a candidate as Daines, who has the power of incumbency and $4.9 million in the bank before the race even starts.

The answer is simple. If Daines resigned after the election the process to fill a vacant Senate seat is that the State Republican Central Committee nominates three people, and the Governor selects from those names. And the truth is the GOP in Montana is dominated by far-right looneys and Daines and his pals didn’t trust them to nominate someone who doesn’t wear a tin hat to bed. Someone like Alme (who would be a big improvement over Daines in the Senate).

Or it could just be that Daines is a megalomaniac who couldn’t stand not choosing his successor.

You decide.

Republican Governor Gianforte has Trump Derangement Syndrome

Republican Governor Gianforte has Trump Derangement Syndrome

Great Falls, MT

Our Republican Governor Greg Gianforte (or Giant Fart as known in liberal circles) is on a mission to embrace the worst of trumpism. At the same time, his cult leader, Donald “the orange one”, continues to burn out by whining about his failure to win a peace prize, simultaneously illegally starting a war that has killed multiple troops, overseeing murder of American citizens in US cities, all to go along with his 34 felonies.

What a person to try to carry water for. Great move Gianforte! History will definitely look back on you kindly!

What has Gianforte been up to?

Gianforte’s official governmental Facebook page is full of some of Republicans’ favorite scapegoats.

Attacks on Trans youth

One of Republicans’ favorite targets are trans people just trying to live their lives. The continued assaults and made-up outrage for the handful of trans student athletes really makes me sick.

Trans people make up less than less than 0.002% (10/500,000) of US college athletes. So why all this hate and energy about a handful of people? Oh right, because it is a handy wedge issue to drive voters to the polls. What we actually need to do is protect our trans youth and have Republicans stop treating them as a convenient political talking point.

Where is the energy for addressing the issues that plague women sports like the abuses committed by Larry Nassar in Women’s Gymnastics? That hurt a hell of a lot more people. In fact, rather than protecting women’s sports, bans on trans athletes encourage bullying, discrimination, and even violence against women and girls. These attacks are hateful and wrong, but sadly that fits Gianforte’s brand.

FB post by Governor Gianforte with picture of trump signing a bill surrounding by little girls. The post reads "On National Girls and Women in Sports Day, we affirm our commitment to defending the integrity of women's sports and make it clear that biological men do not belong on the same playing field."

Pushed for Montana Youth to Start Hate-Based Clubs

This month, GG also boosted TP USA clubs multiple times, encouraging Montana youth to start clubs to spread their white supremacy propaganda. Gross.

FB post by Governor Gianforte with picture of him speaking in front of children holding Club America signs. The post states "Yesterday, Superintendent Susie Hedalen joined me in encouraging Montana educators to support students who want to start a Club America chapter in their high school. I’m grateful for her support. Read Supt. Hedalen’s letter to school superintendents here: https://gov.mt.gov/.../governor/LETTER260204clubamerica1.pdf"

FB post by Governor Gianforte with picture of Erika Kirk next to child. The post states "It was an honor to host Erika Kirk to visit with Montana Turning Point USA students. Proud to help see Charlie's mission through as we encourage every high school to establish a Club America chapter."

Attacked Local Government

In January 2026, Helena City Commission approved a resolution calling for its police officers to “avoid” assisting federal authorities with immigration enforcement. GG and Republican State Attorney General Austen Knudsen decided the modest resolution was an assault on the fascist regime! And it made them big mad. At a press conference and in numerous FB posts, Gianforte announced an investigation into the City of Helena for a potential violation of Montana’s sanctuary city ban.

The City of Helena’s response to Gianforte’s announcement was posted the same day and in part stated “The resolution was drafted with careful consideration of applicable local, state, and federal law, and the City believes the resolution is consistent with those legal requirements. The City remains committed to upholding all applicable federal and state laws.”

I’m not a lawyer but I’ve read the Helena resolution and the text of the 2021 HB 200: Establish laws prohibiting sanctuary cities in Montana and it is clear the Helena resolution was drafted with consideration of the state law.

Check out Gianforte’s post from February 17th, where he states “Here’s a clear message to all local governments across the state: If you are found to be in violation of state law, there will be penalties.” He’s sending a message alright. And the message is don’t resist! Don’t push back! Even if your citizens are being illegally detained and killed.

FB post by Governor Gianforte, screen shot of the governor at a press conference. The post states "Joined by Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen today we launched an investigation into the City of Helena for a potential violation of Montana's sanctuary city ban. In Montana, we don’t tolerate defiance and we support our law enforcement officers."

FB post by Governor Gianforte with pictures of ICE agents and of himself next to trump. The post states "We don't allow sanctuary cities in Montana. Here's a clear message to all local governments across the state: If you are found to be in violation of state law, there will be penalties."

Sucking up to Donald

As the final low note for February 2026, GG has also posted multiple posts sucking up to the orange one. Just paraphrasing his posts, Gianforte is basically saying: You are doing so great Mr. President, thank you for raising prices for all Americans with your illegal tariffs! Can I lick your boots clean Mr. President?

FB post by Governor Gianforte stating "In one year, President Trump has secured our borders, strengthened our communities, and brought the American dream into greater reach. Thanks to President Donald J. Trump’s leadership, the state of our union is strong."

FB post by Governor Gianforte with picture of himself, his wife, and trump. The post states "America is back. God bless President Trump"

Imagine. Tying yourself to the sinking ship of an almost 80-year-old felon who is destroying our democracy. Let’s be honest, Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) is real, but it’s Gianforte who has it.
