Just when you thought Montana’s U.S. Senate race was about as strange as it could get, we find out Seth Bodnar is now working with former West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin. Manchin is best known as a hostage-taker and dealmaker during his years in the U.S. Senate. Over the years, he angered many in the Senate by holding up legislation and cutting deals to get what he wanted. Among other things, he faced scrutiny over his financial ties to the coal industry. Manchin owned a coal brokerage business that paid his blind trust $500,000 per year while he was serving in the Senate. He resigned from the Democratic Party and became an independent shortly before leaving the Senate in 2024.
CNN is reporting that Manchin is forming a group to promote independent candidates across the country. The new group, the Independent Leadership Council, held its first meeting on July 23 in West Virginia. Manchin says he will head the group along with his daughter. Seth Bodnar attended, along with only two other independent candidates: Kevin Kiley, a former Republican now running as an independent in California, and Iowa congressional candidate Michael Bridgford.
Manchin’s daughter, Heather, a former pharmaceutical executive, will be leading the effort alongside her father. In 2023, she founded a group called Americans Together, which has also been promoting independent campaigns. Also in attendance at the meeting with Bodnar was Adam Brandon, a former Tea Party leader and president of FreedomWorks, a conservative political organization that closed in 2024. Another person attending was Seth Cohen, former Chief Impact Officer at Forbes Media and now working for the Independent Center.
As a clearer picture of Bodnar emerges, there is plenty to be concerned about. Taking his cues from someone like Joe Manchin is definitely a warning sign.
Well that seals it for me. FUCK Bodnar! Dude isn’t even in office yet and he’s already getting fitted for his new collar! I’ll stick with Alani. She’s shown enough courage to pick a side, the right side, and stick with it! Poor Seth, like a befuddled teenage, is still trying to find himself! We can’t waste time with an essentially prepubescent politician while he matures into whatever the hell he’s going to be! We need a solid Dem now! Someone who is unafraid to represent us, not entertain dark forces of the dark money even casually! Bodnar has shown himself to be not the Manchurian candidate, but the Manchin candidate! Close enough!

So disappointed in the Dems and Dem-leaning organizations that have lent their support for Bogner. If their goal is to find some happy medium ground, then just how far to the right must we go to attract republican voters, who happen to have about 60,000 more senatorial votes in Montana than do democrats (170,000 to 112,000 based on how many votes were cast in this last senatorial election, which does not count independents or libertarians). How many times must this nation try a third party only to see that backfires on us all. Perhaps I’m also greatly disappointed in our democratic party for not finding individuals who are interested in running for office who have a name and platform that can be embraced by a majority of Montanans. I can only hope that the behavior of the republicans serving in DC have alienated our electorate.
I voted for Alani Bankhead in the primary and will definitely vote for her this November. I’m disappointed that Mr. Bodnar thoughtlessly followed his ego into an action that will most likely guarantee that Montana will continue to be represented in the U.S. Senate by two MAGA Republicans.
